Business exchange Event with IoD – Luke

My name is Luke Joseph and I am currently an intern at Socialis. I am from the UK where I am attending the University of Southampton. My course of choice is Computer Science, and have an interest in AI as well as creative fields within Computing such as Game development and design (not just web).

On July 8, 2025, I had the opportunity to participate in a business exchange meeting with a delegation from The Institute of Directors (IoD) at the Osaka Sansokan Hall as an intern at Socialis. With the goal of bringing together startup companies from the UK (and Europe) to Osaka, the event featured representatives from a wide range of industries, with technology as a common theme.

From energy production and clothing to retro gaming-themed event organisers, many fascinating businesses presented their ideas. There were also companies offering services in marketing and guidance for securing investment. These organisations, along with representatives from the British Consulate-General Osaka, could provide valuable support and connections for Socialis.

It was a great experience for me personally, as I was able to make full use of my bilingual skills and see myself flourish in an environment of startups, all striving to grow and innovate. I also gained insights into which industries are popular among recent startups—particularly those connecting Europe and Osaka (and therefore Japan)—as well as the kinds of support and services available to companies wishing to operate here.

Props to everyone who presented. The event also served as a useful reminder of the important do’s and don’ts of pitching, especially when delivering a lightning talk.
